Deal on Gun Violence Prevention Remains Elusive
Last week, Gov. Tim Walz spoke publicly about the likelihood of a special legislative session this fall to address issues of gun violence. In what appeared to some as a change of course, Walz told reporters that there needs to be an agreement prior to calling the special session, stating that without a bipartisan agreement, “calling a special session would be a waste of time and money.”
Legislative Democrats previously released their legislative priorities for a special legislative session which included a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and binary triggers, as well as additional funding for mental health and other school safety measures. Republican legislators have also put forward proposals, generally focusing on school safety measures and mental health funding.
Minnesota’s Electoral Landscape Continues to Evolve
With only weeks until municipal elections in Minneapolis and St. Paul, the electoral landscape for 2025 and 2026 continues to evolve. A few recent developments include:
New United States Attorney for Minnesota
After the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Andrew Lugar earlier this year and the service of two interim U.S. attorneys, the United States Senate confirmed Daniel Rosen as the new U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota. Daniel Rosen, a Minnesota native, was nominated by President Trump earlier this year and confirmed by a vote of 51-47. Rosen is a graduate of the university of Minnesota Law School and has more than 30 years of experience practicing law.
