Yesterday was General Election Day in Minnesota and around the country with many interesting races impacting state and local politics. LHPA is monitoring the Saint Paul and Minneapolis mayoral races, two Minnesota Senate special election races, and the Minneapolis and Bloomington City Council races. Election results, as reported today, are listed below:
Saint Paul Mayor
A surprise win for Saint Paul mayor as current Minnesota State Representative Kaohly Her unseats incumbent Mayor Melvin Carter. Her is the first woman and first Hmong American mayor in Saint Paul history.
Saint Paul Ballot Measure
With a vote of 68% to 32%, voters approved the ballot measure that would make a change to the city’s charter and would allow the Saint Paul City Council to give out fines for ordinance violations.
Minneapolis Mayor
Mayor Jacob Frey won his bid for re-election, beating his closest opponent, current Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh, after a second round of tabulation in the election that used ranked choice voting.
Minnesota State Senate
Two special election seats were held yesterday for the Minnesota Senate. With a DFL win in District 47, Democrats will hold the majority with a 34-33 one vote lead.

Minneapolis City Council
All but one incumbent held on to their seat in the Minneapolis City Council race, as all thirteen wards were up for election. Wards 5, 7, 8 and 11 elected new city council members.

The third largest municipality in the Twin Cities, the City of Bloomington had three of its six city council seats on the ballot this fall.
