Legislative Session Begins Today
The Minnesota Legislature officially begins the 2026 legislative session at noon today. With an evenly split House of Representatives, a one seat Democratic majority in the Senate, and all 201 legislative seats on the ballot in November, many expect the legislative session to be more political than productive. However, despite not needing to pass a state budget, there will be significant attention on a potential public infrastructure and capital investment package throughout the session. The legislature must adjourn by midnight on May 18, 2026.
Security Updates at the Capitol Complex
Legislators and visitors should expect increased screening, including walk-through metal detectors and handheld wands, more controlled building access points, and tighter ticketed committee room capacity/escort practices during the 2006 legislative session. There are currently four public security entrances: Minnesota Senate Building (MSB); the Capitol tunnel entrance; the Centennial Office Building entrance; and an ADA-compliant entrance located under the front steps of the Capitol at ground level. These entrances will be heavily monitored, as well the entire Capitol Complex.
MN Officials Testify Before Congress
The US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held an oversight hearing where Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and other Minnesota officials, including Rep. Harry Niska (R- Maple Grove), testified about fraud, immigration and law enforcement operations last week. Much of the hearing focused on the significant reports of fraud within the state programs and alleged misuse of taxpayer funds.
Rep. Schomacker Announces Retirement
Rep Joe Schomacker (R-Luverne) announced last week that he will not seek re-election in November. Schomacker, an eight-term legislator, announced that he was retiring to spend more time supporting several family businesses. During his eight terms, Schomacker was known for his expertise with nursing home and long-term care while also focusing on water infrastructure. He currently co-chairs the Human Services Finance and Policy Committee.
